WHAT GOD DID IN OUR CONGREGATION AND OUR DENOMINATION
Can God convert a congregation — a denomination — from legalism to reliance on God’s grace?
The answer is, “Yes!”, and All For Christ, a congregation of Grace Communion International (GCI) has been greatly blessed because God did exactly that, converted a denomination – our denomination, then named The Worldwide Church of God. Formerly we had an intense focus on the law such that we kept a seventh day Sabbath, we kept what most would know as the “Jewish” Holy Days and among other legalisms, we avoided consuming the unclean meats of Leviticus, the eleventh chapter. The hermeneutic or filter through which we then read all scripture was that the law was still in force and binding for Christians.
Beginning in the mid 1990’s God moved us – sometimes kicking and screaming – from a central focus on the law to a central focus on Jesus Christ and the grace that he gives us. God gave us to know His gracious love towards us in Jesus. We now understand that no one is justified by keeping the law – that our only justification is through God the Father’s Son, Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for us. We now know that Sabbath days and Holy Day days were mere shadows of the reality that is in Christ.
Our worship service is on Sunday. We no longer keep the “Jewish” Holy Days and no longer concern ourselves about avoiding the “unclean meats” of Leviticus 11. We have been given to clearly see that we are saved by grace alone, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Since we’ve been delivered from such an intense focus on the law and legalism by God’s grace, we reach out to all those who are alienated from Christ because they are trying to be justified by some part or all of the law as we once were (Galatians 5:4). We know by experience the veil that legalism places over our faces (1 Corinthians 3:14-16) and rejoice to see people believe and trust totally in Christ for the only real salvation that exists so that the veil is stripped away. We have a deep, deep appreciation for God’s grace because he delivered us from hyper-legalism.
